Project Description

JJ Waller is a highly acclaimed Brighton photographer and publisher who will be both exhibiting and talking about his series of photography books that document life in the English coastal towns of Brighton, Blackpool and St Leonards on Sea. At the festival he will talk for the first time on how his St Leonards work was produced over a nine year period and why he thinks this book in particular has become such a huge success. We look forward to welcoming JJ Waller to the festival.

Despite never having been given a Box Brownie as a child his interest in photography took pole position when he commenced an Editorial Photography Degree under the inspirational tutelage of Magnum photographer Mark Power and Fine Art photographer Jim Cooke. At this time he was shortlisted for an AA Travel Award and was a winner of a Thames & Hudson Student Photographer Prize. On leaving University Waller completed a 12 month period as artist in residence at Gatwick Airport. He then toured the world as assistant to photographer Paul Lowe, at the time also with the Magnum agency. Waller subsequently spent a number of years as a photography producer in the advertising industry, working on many award-winning campaigns in both the US and the UK. Waller largely produced all aspects of these adverts including castings and locations for leading British photographers agent Wyatt-Clarke Jones.

In recent years Waller has been concentrating primarily on his own editorial and commercial photography.
His images regularly appear internationally in print and online publications, billboards, books, tour posters as well as football and theatre programmes.

He is a keen supporter and contributor to the Hastings Online Times.

Waller’s first solo book project JJ Waller’s Brighton Volume 01 was published by curious-publishing.
